Why “billable weight” mattersPor qué importa el “peso facturable”
Shipping companies charge based on whichever is greater: the actual weight of your box on a scale, or its dimensional (volumetric) weight — an estimate of how much space it takes up, based on its size. A large, lightweight box can cost more to ship than a small, heavy one, because it takes up valuable space on the plane or ship. The formula this calculator uses is a standard industry estimate: (Length × Width × Height in inches) ÷ 166 = dimensional weight in pounds. Example: a box measuring 20″ × 16″ × 12″ gives (20 × 16 × 12) ÷ 166 = 23.1 lb dimensional weight. If that same box weighs 15 lb on the scale, your billable weight is 23.1 lb — the larger of the two. In metric, the same idea uses (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 6000 = dimensional weight in kg. Example: a box measuring 50 × 40 × 30 cm gives (50 × 40 × 30) ÷ 6000 = 10 kg dimensional weight.
